Betadine
Betadine is an iodine-based antiseptic for treatment and prevention of infections in the skin and mucous membranes caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Betadine has been available on the market since the 1960s and is the market leader in several European countries, including France, Italy, and Spain. Betadine can be used for wound healing, diabetic foot care, emergency care, treatment of infections, oral hygiene, gynecological care, and eye surgery. Betadine sales were initially concentrated in the hospital sector, but self-care and doctor recommendations have expanded the OTC market. In 2009, Betadine sales amounted to SEK 898 million (798). Aldara
Aldara has three indications: actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinomas, and genital condylomas in men and women. The active ingredient in Aldara is imiquimod, a proprietary ingredient with a unique mechanism of action. Imiquimod is an immunomodulating agent that activates the body’s own immune defenses through the skin.Actinic keratosis is a skin condition characterized by reddish-brown, flaky spots on sun-damaged skin; the condition may be precancerous, and could lead to squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and may be caused by sun exposure. Aldara works with the body’s immune system to form natural substances that help fight basal cell carcinoma. Since basal cell carcinoma is rarely metastatic, most patients can be cured. Genital condylomas in men and women are caused by a virus (the human papilloma virus). In 2009, Aldara generated sales of SEK 481 million (415). |
