Drug Development

As a specialty pharma company, Meda has chosen to refrain from capital-intensive, risky early research. Instead, its resources are focused on development in the late clinical and registration phases.

Meda’s development function has around 200 employees who work on development, clinical trials, and drug registration. Efforts are often based on well known active ingredients in which the characteristics of an existing product are improved, for example through:

  • a new administration method, such as Astepro once-daily, Zyclara, Onsolis, and Tambocor (controlled release).
  • combination products, such as Dymista, Xerese, Axorid and a combination product of clindamycin and tretinoin.
  • new indications for existing drugs, such as Aldara and flupirtine.

Meda invested approximately SEK 136 million* in drug development in 2011.
In recent years, Meda has built a strong pipeline of products in the late clinical phase for its key therapy areas.
